Ostenil is a treatment that we use for osteoarthritis in joints. It is a solution containing hyaluronic acid. It is injected into the joint space and helps to restore the normal balance between the breakdown and production of hyaluronic acid.
What does Ostenil do?
Ostenil can help to reduce pain and stiffness and improve the symptoms of osteoarthritis.
When would you use Ostenil rather than a Steroid?
Ostenil works differently to a steroid injection (which is an anti-inflammatory). Many people with osteoarthritis in the feet or ankles do not have inflammation, but they have pain associated with joint swelling and stiffness. Ostenil is perhaps a better choice in these instances, however we can even do a combination of Ostenil, followed by a steroid. We make decisions based on our assessment of you and your pain or problem.
How long does Ostenil last?
This depends on the individual and condition, but it works for an average of 6 months according to research. That being said, if you can combine the Ostenil injection with other treatments such as footwear modifications, orthoses or exercises, the effects can hopefully be longer term. The really good news is that you can have multiple Ostenil injections into the same joint as it is not considered harmful for the joint in the same way that having multiple steroid injections could be.
