Steroid injections
A steroid injection (often called a cortisone injection) can be used to reduce inflammation and pain in certain foot and ankle conditions. Most commonly inflammation of joints like the big toe, midfoot or ankle. They can also be used for managing conditions like Morton’s neuroma.Â
Steroids (we most commonly use Depo-Medrone) work by inhibiting chemicals that cause inflammation and can cause swelling and pain. The injections help to reduce discomfort and improve mobility.Â
The effects typically start within a few days but can take up to 6 weeks. They can last for several months or longer. However, repeated use may weaken soft tissues, so they are usually used as part of a broader treatment plan.Â
