Gout is a type of arthritis that causes sudden pain, swelling and redness in your joints — often starting in the feet. Many people are surprised to find that a podiatrist (a foot specialist) can play a big role in treating this painful condition. Here’s what you need to know.
What Is Gout?
Gout happens when a waste product in the body called uric acid builds up in the blood. If there’s too much uric acid, it can form sharp crystals that settle in your joints — especially the joint at the base of your big toe.
These crystals cause the joint to become inflamed and very painful. Gout attacks can come on suddenly, often during the night.
What Are the Symptoms of Gout?
Gout usually affects one joint at a time. The most common signs are:
- Sudden, intense pain in a joint (often the big toe)
- Swelling in the area
- Redness and warmth around the joint
- Stiffness or difficulty moving the joint
- Skin that may look shiny or feel tight
Attacks can last a few days or even a week or more. Some people only get one attack, while others may have them regularly.
What Causes Gout?
Gout is linked to high levels of uric acid in the blood, which can be caused by:
- A diet high in red meat, shellfish, or sugary drinks
- Drinking too much alcohol, especially beer
- Being overweight
- Certain health conditions, like kidney disease or diabetes
- Some medications, such as water tablets (diuretics)
Sometimes, gout runs in families.
How Can a Podiatrist Help?
As foot specialists, podiatrists are often the first to spot gout — especially because it usually starts in the feet.
Here’s how we can help:
- Identify the problem early: We assess your symptoms and may suggest blood tests or refer you for imaging to confirm gout.
- Manage pain and swelling: We give advice on how to reduce discomfort during a flare-up. This might include footwear changes, ice therapy, and rest.
- Protect your joints: We can provide custom insoles (orthotics) to reduce pressure on the affected joints and prevent more pain.
- Prevent future attacks: We work with your GP or specialist to manage underlying causes and help reduce your chances of further gout attacks.
Why Early Treatment Matters
Gout is painful, but it’s also treatable. If left untreated, it can damage your joints and affect your ability to walk comfortably. That’s why it’s important to get help early — especially if you’re having repeated attacks.
At Supafoot, we’re here to help you live pain-free. If you’ve had foot pain or suspect it might be gout, book an assessment with one of our expert podiatrists.
