Toe deformities
Toe deformities are conditions where the toes become misaligned or take on an abnormal shape, often due to muscle imbalance, arthritis, injury, or wearing ill-fitting shoes. These deformities can cause pain, difficulty walking, and problems with footwear.
Common types include:
- Hammer toe: The toe bends downward at the middle joint.
- Claw toe: The toe bends upward at the base and downward at the middle and end joints.
- Mallet toe: The toe bends downward at the joint closest to the tip.
- Overlapping or underlapping toes: Toes cross over or tuck under neighboring toes.
Treatment depends on the severity and may include stretching exercises, orthotics, padding, and proper footwear. In more advanced cases, surgical correction might be necessary. A podiatrist can assess the condition and recommend the most suitable treatment plan.
